0. Introduction.

Well, well, well. What have we here? It looks like three things. Another
October, another September DreamHost newsletter, and another Fall TV
season in full swing. And it's a GOOD thing too, because I had gotten so
sick of "Are you smarter than a fifth grader" that I decided to go try
out for "Who wants to be a Millionaire?" yesterday.

I hadn't realized anybody even still wanted to be a Millionaire. But, at
least 200 people a day do; and all had to answer a quick survey:

* "If you make it to the hot seat, what's the first thing you'd want to
tell Meredith about yourself?"
Who the heck is Meredith? What happened to Regis? Where's Howie Mandel?

* "How would winning $1 million change your life?"
I could finally hire somebody decent like Warren Buffet or Bill Gates to
write these newsletters.

* "What is one thing you do that makes people laugh?"
Attempt a serious newsletter.

* "If you could vote yourself as "best-____" or "most-likely-to-____",
what would be your vote?"
I guess I'd have to go with "most-likely-to-____" .

* "Have you ever appeared in a newspaper, magazine, or on TV before? If
so, where and why?"
Newsletters baby, hundreds of em.

* "Why do you want to be on Millionaire?"
Because web hosting takes too long.

1. Are You Older than a Fifth Grader?

Well, it turns out, I'm no Millionaire. Or at least not ON Millionaire.

But I AM smarter than a Fifth Grader. Or at least OLDER than a Fifth
Grader:

  http://blog.dreamhost.com/2007/09/24/are-you-older-than-a-fifth-grader

And DreamHost is too! Yes... TEN years old! And if you read that whole
blog post about it, YOU'LL be older than a Fifth Grader before you know
it too!

And you'll also find out about our new "one true plan," and that we
doubled everybody's bandwidth and will be eventually rolling out a
doubling of everybody's disk as well!

AND you can now pre-pay for 3, 5, or even TEN years to get $7.95/month,
$6.95/month, and $5.95/month effective rates on your hosting, all from:

(Click "edit" next to your hosting plan, ya doof!)

2. New One-Click: Pligg!

I remember back in Fifth Grade (and is it really correct to Capitalize
that?) I would spend all my time reading my peers stories and then
deciding if they were cool or not. I always wished back then there was a
web site like digg.com, as well as a way for me to make my OWN digg.com
at my own site, as well as just web sites in general.

Well, for those of you born in 1997, it's your LUCKY GRADE:

     https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=goodies.installer

is the place where you can install all kinds of web site software in just
"one-click" .. and:

     http://www.pligg.com/

is the new software we've just added which allows YOU to make your very
own digg.com-like site without all the brains and design-skills the
original diggers had/most likely still have!

########################################################################
3. Old One-Click: activeCollab!

There was nothing in Fifth Grade that got me riled up more than 3rd
Generation Garbage Pail Kids. Nothing besides Open Source projects that
we offer as a one-click install who all of the sudden decide to start
charging ridiculous prices for their previously free software!

   http://www.activecollab.com/blog/49/activecollab-1.0-plans-and-prices

Twenty years on, and still nothing's changed! Well, things have changed
a little it looks like, because if you follow that link activeCollab has
apparently gotten a little scared and crossed EVERYTHING out.. implying
they're about to back track on their change.

WELL IT'S TOO LATE FOR SORRY!!!

We've ALREADY dropped activeCollab as one of our one-clicks we offer.
Hopefully someday we'll be able to find some other open source software
solution that offers similar functionality...

########################################################################
4. New One-Click: dotProject!

My, how time flies! It seems like only seconds ago I was wistfully day-
dreaming of a time when we'd have some sort of replacement for
activeCollab to offer at our one-click panel:

     https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=goodies.installer

And now, immediately, that time is NIGH?!

     http://www.dotproject.net/

Is about the closest thing we could find, so give it a try if you really
need some luke-warm online PHP open-source project tracking and
collaboration action!

########################################################################
5. Newly Restrict Panel Login IPs!

In a crazy misguided attempt to improve system security, we've just
added a new feature to our panel at:

     https://panel.dreamhost.com/id/?tab=prefs

Said feature is of great use for those who could be roughly described by
the sentence "I am deathly afraid of the Internet AND the DreamHost web
panel must be more secure than my online banking, my medical records,
and my physical home. And I access the web from a static IP."

You can now ONLY allow access to your panel account from certain IP
addresses, and if you try logging in from a new IP not already allowed
access, an email confirmation is sent to the address we have on file
with a link to log you in.

So basically, if you turn this feature on, access to your account is
completely safe, except from anybody who has physical access to a
computer you've logged in from before or your email address, arguably
the two ways somebody would be MOST likely to get your web panel
password in the first place.

########################################################################
6. New Charities!

Boy was I feeling charitable with my review of the last feature! Which
got me thinking, it's about time we changed the charities you can give
to and have us match your donation at:

     https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=home.charity

The last ones we had were pretty awesome, and we ended up giving $412.86
times two to http://www.apraxia-kids.org/ and $441.02 times two to
http://www.publiccounsel.org/ to boot. The ones we're going to have for
October-December are just as awesome, and more so, because their URLs are
on average 6.5 characters shorter:

http://www.thelifelink.org/ (A Santa Fe homeless shelter)
     http://www.vhl.org/ (Von Hippel-Lindau disease)

Give now and you'll get more presents from the Great Pumpkin, Turkey Man,
and Santa Claus!

How I loved Turkey Man back in Fifth Grade.

########################################################################
7. DHSOTM

It wouldn't be October without a September DreamHost Site of the Month
winner.

     http://www.youphood.com/

I dunno.. it kind of reminds me of http://www.wikipes.com/, the winner
from January 2005! Holy bad-tv-game-shows, I remembered a DHSOTM winner
from 20 months ago??! How's THAT for smarter than a Fifth Grader?

     https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=home.dhsotm

The place to go to submit your site for everlasting (at least 20 months)
of Internet Fame and Ridicule.
