User talk:Scjessey/Pink Floyd
From DreamHost
Just what does this have to do with Dreamhost? Are there going to be pages here for every musical artist and group now? -- Dan -- 08:23, 31 Mar 2005 (PST)
Scjessey: We're just having a bit of fun. I like the light-hearted approach that DreamHost has with its emails, and we're just trying to keep that flavor here. I see nothing wrong in the occasional tangential page. They are mostly just extensions of user pages.
JasonR: Agreed. We could change them to external links to [my Wiki]... But since I pimp other hosts.. I probably wouldn't recomend it.
Since MikeS is a DH'er, I think you shouldn't just take this off the hook so easily. Please explain why this should be kept, and how it fits with every User having some number X of personal pages. I'm not saying there's no place for humor, but a few people have now expressed doubt about this particular page, and you haven't given much explanation. -- 0-0 17:15, 19 Dec 2006 (PST)
- 0-0, How is that any different than people expressing doubts about your "outages wiki", which ultimately ended up on *your* user page with Sabrejack's blessing? This has about as much "usefulness" as that page did (which is little to none), so why shouldn't it get the same treatment? ;-) - Rlparker 17:46, 19 Dec 2006 (PST)
- At the moment, if forced to vote, I would vote to keep this page, and I'm not sure how I feel about moving it. However, to my knowledge, this is the first overt example of a User having multiple user pages. Hopefully without re-opening that debate - whether you think it has any potential value or not, you can't deny the for customers, by customers sites are intended to provide solutions to the comments and complaints about old wiki and forum software, and about company-minimized or biased reporting of outages; therefore, it is a completely different category, imho. I want to know how many User pages are allowed, and what are the limits on categorizing; I was forced to un-categorize my User page. Moving this page to avoid discussion only avoids settling the questions. -- 0-0 18:26, 19 Dec 2006 (PST)
- I see (sigh). You guys ought to just meet somewhere at dawn and shoot at each other with dueling pistols. Reminds me of the movie, The Duellists. ;-) Rlparker 18:58, 19 Dec 2006 (PST)
- "this is the first overt example of a User having multiple user pages"
- This is following a convention adopted by the Wikipedia. The article is inappropriate for the "wiki proper", but perfectly harmless in the user namespace. My user namespace is like my personal sandbox. Here is another example usage: User:Scjessey/Search. -- Scjessey 20:23, 19 Dec 2006 (PST)
This is a subpage. Any article can have a sub-article if appropriate (traditional uses for main namespace articles would be, say, Technology as an informational article, with Technology/Patchnotes as an archive of previous releases). From what I've seen on other wikis, subpages on a user page are generally the ideal place for a user's "pet projects," since they keep the main namespace clean, but also keep the user's main userpage clean, and allow for a separate edit history for the pet project if the user wants it to be something collaborative. Think of it this way: You have the deed to your user page and its subpages. As long as you don't put anything that makes your neighbors grab their torches and pitchforks and burn it to cinders, you should be okay. I think that Scjessey was wise to move the page here, rather than get into a debate about the merits of less-than-DH-related material on the main namespace.
As for the category, user pages and subpages aren't traditionally categorized. Then again, the intent of this particular category was probably to categorize weird/funny articles, not merely those which don't fit into another category (despite what the category description might say). (Ran into an edit conflict, so some of this is similar to what Scjessey said.) --Emufarmers 20:31, 19 Dec 2006 (PST)
- This page is fine here at its new location. There's still the matter of a copyrighted image being used presumably without permission but if you can tag the image with your fair use rationale that should be sufficient. The contents of the page itself are copyrighted (song and album titles, etc.) but I'm sure that also falls under fair use somewhere.. whatever usage allows wikipedia to list the same information. --Sabrejack 14:19, 20 Dec 2006 (PST)
