Talk:PHP resources

I would like to see this page either reorganized, or redone completely. It seems to me that "PHP Classes" implies education on just that, not a database of freely downloadable classes. While a link to another page listing such classes would not be inappropriate, this particular page would be better served with a description of what classes are, and maybe a short tutorial. Class tutorials are best left to tutorial sites, the concept's bigger than you think. This wiki is more designed on how to use DH to the best of it's abilities, get misc. things working on the DH servers and a good source of just what all you can do with the DH servers.

If you want to learn about PHP Classes, I'd suggest starting with PHP's own Manual and possibly Zend's PHP5 section. Classes, in general, extend far beyond PHP, so I don't recommend it being your primary source for understanding. Wikipedia has a good large page on Classes and OO Programming.

A nice search on Google on Object Oriented Programming turns up a bunch of information, too. OO Development is simple, but it's not as simple as you might think. It's learning the concept that's far more complex than many understand. Once you're over that hump, OO development is a snap. -- Guice

You misunderstood my intentions. I was simply stating what my plans for the page were. I have more than enough material on PHP sitting in my room with me right now in printed form. The last thing I'm going to do is come to this wiki when I hit a crunch on how to solve some obscure PHP problem. As you say, that is not its intent.

My intent was to simply provide a plan for change for the page, as its then-current form was rather ragged and out of place. I would have begun work on it myself, but I was at work, where the filtering software makes any serious editing difficult. By the time I got home, Ryan had beaten me to it.

The resources you provided are quite good. Why don't you include them in the text of the article itself? -- Malakhi 05:15, 5 May 2005 (PDT)

Added the most obvious link, php.net's documentation. --Fimion 12:09, 14 Nov 2005 (PST)

How to use on Dreamhost

The classes listed do not include information on how to use them on Dreamhost. In fact, it doesn't even say that you can use them on Dreamhost. It is just a list of PHP class libraries.

It would be great to see this information expanded to make it useful. I guess I should assume that all of these classes can be used on shared servers at Dreamhost. It would good if the article said so. I have read that Smarty has to be installed in the PHP directory. Where is the PHP directory? Has Smarty already been installed by Dreamhost? Just what does a user have to do to use Smarty on a shared server on Dreamhost? Providing this kind of information will enable users to get going with these classes rather than having to do a bunch of research and submitting an inquiry to Dreamhost support. -- JerryWin5 11:45, 27 Feb 2006 (PDT)
