Still Eating CPU Minutes

Even if you install Spam Karma 2, spammers are still chewing up your CPU minutes every time they try to post a comment or a trackback. I suspect if you're getting spammed enough, you'll still be chewing up those precious machine seconds even with spam protection.

Removed Some Suggested Anti-Spam Plugins

  • Mollom
    • Pros: Text filtering and content analysis in combination with image/audio CAPTCHAs, works with all languages. Low impact on server overhead. Not needed in combination with other plugins for complete protection.
    • Cons: Requires an API key. The free service level is limited to 100 legitimate posts and 100 correct CAPTCHAs per day (appropriate for most sites).
  • Bad Behavior
    • Pros: Bad Behavior complements other link spam solutions (best combination with Akismet) by acting as a gatekeeper, preventing spammers from ever delivering their junk, and in many cases, from ever reading your site in the first place. This keeps your site’s load down, makes your site logs cleaner, and can help prevent denial of service conditions caused by spammers.
    • Cons: May block legitimate traffic (due to malwares or etc). However developer is pro-active in solving false positives. Whitelisting is also possible.

Reason

Bad Behavior eats up a lot of CPU cycles when being attacked from multiple sources and Mollom has not been tested by DreamHost staff.
