Talk:Environment Setup

From DreamHost

Jump to: navigation, search

I've read through this page and, to be perfectly honest, I can't see how it could be of any use to anyone, ever. Personally, I understand the commands etc that are being explained, but only because I'm experienced in using linux and can see what point it is attempting to make. However, I'm assuming that the tips contained in this page are for people who generally don't have much of a clue, and if so, those people won't have the faintest idea what any of these things really are for, why they would use them, and what they can do to tweak them.

If there's a template for proposed deletion in this wiki, I'd add it here. But I can't find one.

Alternatively, I reckon some significant effort needs to go in to expanding this information.

A final alternative would instead be to link to the various excellent articles already existing on the land of the interweb which explains this kind of stuff. That's the option I'd go for, removing the existing content and replacing it with handy links. Why re-invent the wheel when the wheel we have already works just fine?

merge?

Hi,

on the contrary to Mkns's opinion, I think these kind of pages are of some use to people who kinda know how to do this stuff on their own machines, but don't know how to do it precisely in the DreamHost environment... or I am as stupid as the author of this page since, not having seen it, I built a very similar one in Unix account setup.

In fact, this is adapted from something I'd written in my own wiki that I used to share with other people working with me... since I'm usually the techie (a.k.a. the nerd), I tend to document the things I do in order that it be of use to me (I have a very bad memory(TM)) and to my friends in a copy&paste fashion.

Since I started doing this stuff within DreamHost I thought I'd expand my friendbase (at least for configuring software in a hosted environment), to other users of DreamHost. Anyway, at least I have it as a bookmark for myself and I use DreamHost's diskspace for the wiki and not mine :-P

All in all, now that I found this page, I don't think it's of much use to have a very similar one for Unix account setup... I didn't see a Template for proposed merge or something like that, but, I'd attempt to merge in my page into this and redirect from there to here if this isn't considered rude by this page author(s).

Regards

nope... just cross links

Since I didn't get any feedback on this, and I'm using Unix account setup as is as a precondition in other pages, I'm just leaving both pages and added a small reference from each one to the other.

Proposed External Links

If these external links meet the el policy we should put them up...(unsigned comment by User:Cduke250)

The HOWTO link certainly makes sense, but the other two links have information that could easily be transcribed to the article itself. Please sign all your comments. -- Scjessey 05:17, 9 August 2007 (PDT)
