Talk:Email Setup

From DreamHost

This works! Setting the port to 587 is the key!

From the section "How do I send email from my new email address?" it says, "Snag: Most outgoing mail can be intercepted by another user who on his panel has added bogus mail services for external domains he doesn't own.

Workaround: Use a non-Dreamhost SMTP server. "

Is it just me, or are these statements a little exaggerated? Besides that, itsn't it fairly standard to reference local DNS or DNS cache first, before doing a full lookup - making this a 'universal' issue? If other's agree with me, I'll go ahead and re-word this section. Matttail 23:46, 13 Feb 2006 (PST)

Actually it just looks like it could do with a few less ! every two sentences. ;) Nidonocu 01:42, 24 Feb 2006 (PST)

I've just removed the 'snag' line that was discussed here and incorrectly insinuates that anyone can easily intercept email using our system. While it theoretically can happen, there are a number of safeguards in place to prevent this from happening. The most important of these is a large and comprehensive block list that prevents people from adding ISP and email service provider domains to their account, even if they are not currently hosted in the system. It's still possible for someone to add and likely intercept email from a domain that someone else might own, but this is going to be the case anywhere there's a shared email system and it's not in any way unique to DreamHost.

If someone really feels that this needs to be added back, it should be edited to make it very clear that this is not any sort of vulnerability specific to DreamHost and is something that we've taken steps to prevent anyway. -Mikes 05:31, 12 December 2007 (PST)
