Using Gmail filters to selectively forward messages

The article mentions that you can use a Gmail account for filtering as well as for regular mail usage.

However, the Gmail filter options are very limited - what kind of filter do I need to set up to make sure that messages I forward to the Gmail account for spam filtering will be sent back and then archived and all the regular messages I receive will be treated normally?
