Setting up Dreamweaver
From DreamHost
To setup DreamWeaver 8 to work with your Dreamhost.com account follow the
instructions below. There are 2 ways that you can setup DreamWeaver 8 to connect
to your site using FTP.
- Site
- FTP & RDS Server
FTP & RDS Server
FTP & RDS Server is the basic straight forward FTP connection to your account,
if you understand how FTP and linking works and how to move files around this is
recommended for you.
First open DreamWeaver and on the right hand side you will see a connection
manager, click on the "Manage Sites" link.
This is what you are looking for. "Manage Sites"
Then a Manage sites widow will open up, click on "New..."
Then click on "FTP & RDS Server"
Then Fill out the window that opens up with your FTP login information
- Name = the name of the site that you will see in the Site manager in
DreamWeaver's site manager.
- Access type = Set this to FTP only
- Ftp host = your website url or you can use your Dreamhost server name
servername.dreamhost.com if your
registration has not yet gone through.
- Host directory = The folder that your files will be placed in, make
sure you enter in something here, It's usually your website name.
- Login = Your FTP username
- Password = Your FTP Password, this is different then what you use to
login to the WebPanel unless you have set it up the same.
- Passive mode = Make sure that you have
"Use Passive FTP" checked
Once you have set these settings you will see that you can access your FTP
directory in your Files browser on Dreamweaver, if you already have files on
your site there will be files in this window, if this is a brand new site it
will appear empty
Site
Site is a walk through that helps you setup your site from scratch, if you are
not familiar with FTP then you should use this option.
First open DreamWeaver and on the right hand side you will see a connection
manager, click on the "Manage Sites" link.
This is what you are looking for. "Manage Sites"
Then a Manage sites widow will open up, click on "New..."
Then Click on "Site"
Next window, select "No"
This next option is really up to you as it is asking where you want to store
your website files, if you are the only person that will be editing this site
then you should Edit local copies of your site so you always have the site on
your computer.
If you are sharing website editing with someone else you should use Edit
directly from server so that the both of you always edit the updated file.
Next you will enter in your FTP login information
- How do you connect to your remote server? = FTP
- What is the hostname or FTP address of your Web server? = your website
url or you can use your Dreamhost server name
servername.dreamhost.com if your
registration has not yet gone through.
- What Folder on the server do you want to store your files in? = this is
usually the same as your website name
- What is your FTP login? = Your FTP login username
- What is your FTP password? = Your FTP Password, this is different then
what you use to login to the WebPanel unless you have set it up the same.
If you are going to be editing the site with someone else at the same time then
you can turn this on but if not don't bother with it.
Once your done with this Setup walk through then you will see that your Site
is now setup in the Site manager on the Right side window, Click on the connect
icon to connect to the server.
Then you should see the contents of your Dreamhost.com FTP account, if you don't
have any files already on the server you wont see any there so don't worry about
that.
And that's it your all set and ready to edit and upload your site using Dreamweaver 8.
