Description

There are many different approaches to avoiding spam with Dreamhost. A couple previously mentioned are filtering email through GMail and/or installing a local copy of SpamAssassin with a local ruleset of your own.

The simplest way is to use the tools already provided by Dreamhost. Using a .procmailrc file for sorting and filtering will allow for less chance of lost mail between GMail and DH. Additionally, it will provide a single point of possible failure and use less resources than the previously mentioned methods.

This method has proven to remove up to 90% of incoming spam mail and successfully move it to a user created "Junk" folder for verification. The filter has been provided with smart filtration, it will only present questionable spam mails prior to automatic deletion.

A specialized Dreamhost ruleset was created by one of the Dreamhost customers, Kevin Hatfield. This ruleset is under heavy development, so it will be a good idea to bookmark the link to the file itself for future updates.

Installation

    • Login to your Dreamhost panel and click on your Mail/Junk Filter.
    • Click: “Enable Filter” on your domain of choice.
    • Login to your webmail with Dreamhost via: http://webmail.yourdomain.com. Once in create a “Junk” folder without the quotes in your root of directories. (Not inside any other directory)
    • Next step is to save this file to your computer. (procmailrc)
    • FTP into your account and in the root folder:

Upload the “procmailrc” file. Once the file is placed in your root folder, delete your original “.procmailrc” and then simply right click and rename the procmailrc file to: “.procmailrc” . (Without The Quotes)

After this final step you should now receive any junk email to your “Junk” folder that you created earlier. Welcome to Dreamhost hosting without the Spam!!

Verification of Spam

Logging into Webmail and viewing the contents of your "Junk" folder should now provide a list of new (questionable) Spam emails that have been presented and caught.
