Here is information on how to setup a Nokia mobile phone to access a mailbox hosted with DreamHost. IMAP is assumed, but POP3 settings should be similar. You probably need a S60 Symbian phone for this to work.

1. Start the Messaging program
2. Select Options -> Settings -> E-mail -> Mailboxes
3. Select Options -> New mailbox. A wizard will appear. Select Start.
4. In Mailbox type, select IMAP4.
5. Type in your e-mail address
6. Type in your incomming mail server (mail.yourdomain.com)
7. Type in your outgoing mail server (mail.yourdomain.com)
8. Select an access point or choose Always ask.
9. Type in any name for your mailbox.
10. Select Finish and then OK when told about editing settings

Your mailbox should now work, but some customization can be done. First select the mailbox you just created:

• If you want an encryptet connect, in Connection settings:
  1. In Incoming mail, use your account's full E-Mail Address as your user name and provide your password. Also change the Security option to SSL/TLS for encryption.
  2. In Outgoing mail, use your account's full E-Mail Address as your user name and provide your password. Also change the Security option to SSL/TLS for encryption.
  • See the certificate problem chapter to get rid of a warning you now will see every time you try to read your email.
• In User settings, write your full name in the My name field.
• In User settings, it could be a good idea to enable Send copy to self so that your have your outgoing messages stored on your account.
• Set up Automatic retrival if you want. Email retrieval seems only to download the headers, so it is not that expensive.

Certificate problem

If you chose to use an SSL/TLS encrypted, you will see that you receive a certificate warning every time you try to connect. This is because the certificate used to encrypt the connection is not issued for yourdomain.com. Dreamhost has created their own Certification Authority and that authority (actually just a program) has issued a certificate to *.dreamhost.com. You therefore have to install a CA certificate, authorizing Dreamhost's Certification Authority and change the incomming and outgoing mail servers:

The following text is copied from this page: The certificate mentioned above is only certifying *.dreamhost.com so using mail.<yourdomain>.com for POP and SMTP can be problematic. Instead of using the mail server at mail.<yourdomain>.com, use the actual name of the mail server. Find the name of your mail server and set that as your POP server. To find the name, go to the Dreamhost Control Panel and click on "Account Status" in the upper right corner. If it shows you your email server as "spunky", then it is actually "spunky.mail.dreamhost.com". If you do not have access to Dreamhost Control Panel, talk to your account administrator.

1. In other words, change the email servers (outgoing and incoming) to the server found in the Dreamhost Control Panel with .mail.dreamhost.com as postfix.
2. Then download the dreamhost CA certificate here to a computer.
3. The certificate must be converte to a "der" format before it can be imported into the phone. This is easily done on a linux server, for example your dreamhost server. Type:
   openssl x509 -outform der -in ndn.ca.crt -out Dreamhost.cer
4. Copy the converte CA certificate (Dreamhost.cer) to your Nokia device and open it using the File mgr. You now have a the Dreamhost CA certificate installed and the warnings will go away.
