KB / FTP / File Types
From DreamHost
Files can be of different types: ascii or binary. Basically, binary files can't be read in notepad. Things like pictures, sound files, movies, programs, and word files are binary. Everything else (e.g. HTML, TXT) is Ascii and can be read just by opening it in a simple viewer. When uploading files, some ftp programs ask what type. If it has an automatic setting use that! Otherwise, pick the appropriate type based on the file type you're uploading!

Which multimedia formats do you support?
We support:- Flash
- Shockwave
- Real Audio
- Real Video
- ... and many more.
How many RealMedia streams do we get?
You get unlimited streams!
The only limitation is that you cannot do live encoding of real media. We use "http-streaming" real audio/video, which means that you have a Real Media file already created and uploaded to our server, and when people click on it it is streamed to them. Don't worry, the file really is streamed to them --- they don't have to wait for the whole thing to download before watching it!
What is http streaming RealAudio/Video?
It is streaming real audio/video from an already existing file rather than from a live source or with a Real Audio server.
How do I link to my RealAudio/Video files so they stream correctly?
- For each .rm (real audio file), create a plain text file with the extension .ram.
- Each plain text file contains only one line: the full URL of the .rm file.
- Link your html page directly to the .ram file (not the .rm file!).
How do I make RealAudio/video files?
You need the Real Encoder software available from real.com.
I need such and such MIME type installed! How do I do it?
You can add any MIME types you'd like in an .htaccess file with this syntax:
AddType the-mime/type-here .extension
If you need any assistance with this just contact Tech Support from the "Support" section of the Web Panel.
