VPN Users

Use this section to learn how to create and edit your VPN user(s).
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is an encrypted tunnel from our servers to your computer. Thus, although your data will still traverse the public Internet, it will be protected from prying eyes by strong encryption.
For further information about setting up your VPN service, check out the related links in the column to the left of this window.
How do I connect to the VPN in Windows?
Note: You will be asked to reboot your computer as soon as the installation of this software is complete. It is critical that you reboot your computer when asked to do so. You can return to this page after rebooting to complete the configuration process.
Start the Nortel Network's Extranet Access Client software installation program. When you're asked to install and run as an application or service, choose Application(default). Click on Next to continue.
Reboot your computer when asked to do so.
Start the 'Extranet Access Client' program found in the newly created Nortel Networks folder. If you're asked to run the Connection Wizard then click on Yes and proceed to the next step. Otherwise, start the connection wizard from the File menu options of the Extranet Access Client program.
Pick a name for the connection profile, the description is optional. Click on Next to continue.
For the Authentication type select "Username and Password". Click on Next to continue.
Enter your VPN user name and password in the "User Name" and "Password" fields (respectively). Click on Next to continue.
Choose "No, I do not have a Group ID and Group Password". Click on Next to continue.
Enter toy.cloudconnector.com as the host name of the Extranet Access Switch at the remote network. Click on Next to continue.
If you already have an active dial up (modem or cable) connection then choose "No, I do not want to dial first". If you're already connected to the Internet when running the VPN client software you don't need to Dial-up to establish a connection. Click on Next to continue.
You're done with the connection wizard! Click on Finish.
You'll see a screen displaying the information entered via the connection wizard. Click on Connect to start your VPN connection. You only need to run the connection wizard once, the next time you want to establish a VPN connection simply start the Extranet Access Client program found in the Nortel Networks Folder.
How do I connect to the VPN using Windows from behind a NAT gateway?
First, make sure that you are using version 415 of the Nortel Contivity client. The client is available here.
Second, direct your client at ant.cloudconnector.com rather than toy.cloudconnector.com.
How do I connect to the VPN using Mac OS X?
The recommended (and easiest) method is to use the Netlock VPN Client for Nortel Contivity. It is an IPSec client, can be evaluated for free, and is available here.
Another method is to use DigiTunnel, from Gracion Software. This is a PPTP client. DigiTunnel is available here.
Another method is to use the FreeBSD/Darwin port of pptpclient. There is a GUI that goes along with it.
If you are very ambitious you can try configuring the IPSec stack built in to Mac OS X, either from the command line or by using one of the freely available GUIs ("VaporSec", or "IPSecuritas" for example) or the commercial solution "VPN Tracker". We have heard reports that this works, but we cannot offer too much help if you go this route.
The Cisco VPN client is not supported. Our VPN concentrator is currently a Nortel Contivity, and thus runs the Nortel Contivity IPSec stack. This is important to know if you are configuring another IPSec stack (such as Mac OS X) to talk to it, as not all IPSec stacks are completely compatible with one another.
Connecting without the VPN client
Not interested in downloading a special client to connect to the VPN? You don't have to! If you're familiar with setting up network connections in your favorite operating system or want to figure it out on your own, just connect to the VPN's address: toy.cloudconnector.com.
You'll need to authenticate with the username and password that you set up in the control panel, of course.
Connecting manually in Windows XP
- Open the Windows Control Panel.
- Open the Network Connections item in Control Panel. A list of existing dial-up and LAN connections will appear.
- Choose the 'Create a new connection' item from the left-hand side of the window. The Windows XP New Connection Wizard will appear on the screen.
- First click Next to begin the wizard, then choose the 'Connect to the network at my workplace' item from the list and click Next.
- On the Network Connection page of the wizard, choose the 'Virtual Private Network connection' option and click Next.
- Enter a name for the new VPN connection in the 'Company Name' field and click Next. The name chosen need not match the name of an actual business.
- Choose an option on the 'Public Network' screen and click Next. The default option, 'Automatically dial this initial connection' can be used if the VPN connection will always be initiated when the computer is not already connected to the Internet. Otherwise, choose the 'Do not dial the initial connection' option. This option requires that the public Internet connection be established first, before this new VPN connection will be initiated.
- Enter the name or IP address of the VPN remote access server to connect to, and click Next. Company network administrators will provide this information.
- Choose an option on the "Connection Availability" screen and click Next. The default option, 'My Use Only,' ensures that Windows will make this new connection available only to the currently logged on user. Otherwise, choose the 'Anyone's use' option.
- Click Finish to complete the wizard. The new VPN connection information has been saved.
