Automatically respond to email sent to one or more of your aliases by adding an autoresponder. Simply click add a new autoresponder (above) or add one (below) to get started!

Note: Autoresponders are set up so that they only send one message per email address a day. So if you are testing your autoresponder and you send three messages, expect to only receive one auto-response.

Can I send HTML encoded auto-responders?

Yes, you can!

Just click off the checkbox next to "Is this HTML?" checkbox. This will result in HTML tags in your message as being interpretted as HTML for people whose mail clients have HTML capabilities.

You should paste your HTML code directly into the text area that says "Message:".

Also, don't worry that some people who get your auto-responder can't read HTML-formatted email! Your message is sent as a multi-part message--those who can't read HTML will get a plain text version!

What is an autoresponder?

Autoresponders automatically send a pre-written email to everyone who writes to a designated email alias at your site. It's a good way of handling multiple similar requests that your site might generate.

And don't worry, the original email still goes through to you as well!

An Example: You have a web page devoted to the art of Johannes Vermeer. 1000 people a day write to you@yourdomain.com, asking for more information about this great Dutch painter. What to do? Simply set up an email alias called vermeer@yourdomain.com (or whatever you want to call it), then create an autoresponder for this alias, containing links to other Vermeer sites, and basic information about the artist and his life. Now, every time someone writes to vermeer@yourdomain.com, an email with that information will be sent to them, and you didn't have to do a thing!

Can I change my autoresponder message?

Yes!

Simply log on to the Account Control Panel. Select the Mail tab, and click on the Autoresponders link.

Click on edit to change your return address, message, title, etc. Click on the delete link to delete the autoresponder completely. Auto-responders messages are formatted exactly as you enter the text in the textarea at our web panel.

How do I set up an autoresponder?

It's easy!

  1. Simply log into the Account Control Panel. Select the Mail tab, and click on the Autoresponders link.
  2. Click on the Add a New Autoresponder link.
  3. Use the drop down menu to select an alias to associate with the autoresponder. (* is a 'catch all' address)
  4. Choose the name that will appear in the "From" line of the email.
  5. Choose a title for your response, which will appear in the title bar of the email: <img src = "./images/illustrations/aralias.gif">
  6. Write the text of the email that you wish to send to people who write to this alias: <img src = "./images/illustrations/armessage.gif">
  7. Press the Submit Responder button, and you're done!
Note also that you can use an autoresponder with a web-based form-to-email! Simply set up an autoresponder for the email address that you have set the form mail to go to! The person who filled out the form will get your autoresponse!

Note: Autoresponders will only work on email aliases that use DreamHost mailboxes. If you are using an alias to send to a third party mailbox then the autoresponder will not work.

User Note: Remember to set your "Active Domain" to the domain you want to set up the autoresponder for on the bottom left of your control panel.

Using Webmail interface to setup or change autoresponders

Without using the Control Panel, individual webmail users can:

Log on to the mailboxes interface for the domain, mailboxes.example.com, and scroll down to the Autoresponder interface at the bottom of the page, and enter the autoresponder information for that particular email address.
