What does the GO link do under FTP?
That link is just a link to ftp://userame@domain.com/webdirectory/
A lot of web browsers (netscape and i.e. at least) have built-in ftp capabilities, and by going to a URL in that format, you can drag and drop files into your browser window to upload them to your site!
You'll have to enter your FTP password before it will connect of course. If your browser doesn't support ftp or that link isn't working for you for some reason, you should just use a standard ftp client to upload your site!
How much does it cost to redirect a domain to another site?
Absolutely nothing! Every DreamHost web hosting plan includes unlimited redirected domains.
Redirecting an existing domain (domain forwarding)
- Log in to the Account Control Panel. Select the Domains tab, and click on the Manage Domains link.
- You'll need to add this new domain to your account. Click the 'Add New Domain/Sub-Domain' link at the bottom of the page.
- Scroll down to the "Redirected" area and enter your domain and the URL you'd like to redirect it to.
- Click "Redirect this domain now!" and you're done (assuming you have your domain already registered and using our DNS servers!)
(To change redirecting, just click the edit link for that domain and change it to what you'd like it to do instead!) (To STOP the redirect click the edit link for that domain and then click on the "Fully host this domain now!" button.)
Redirecting a domain like this causes old links to be mapped onto the new domain as though the old name was simply substituted for the new one. For example, http://old-domain/page would become http://new-domain/page.
If you instead want to redirect all requests for the old domain onto a specific page on the new domain, you can use a slight hack to achieve this result: add a "?" to the end of the redirection url to cut off any additions. Say that http://new-domain/update.html is where you want people to go. Then add http://new-domain/update.html? as the rule, and all pages on the old domain will wind up at update.html.
Parking an existing domain
If you do not wish to host your domain at this time, domain "parking" is a convenient way of providing a temporary placeholder for your site. Visitors who try to access www.yourdomain.com will reach a one-page generic message (usually "coming soon" or "under construction" or something like that). Alternately, you can configure your domain to automatically forward visitors to any URL on the Internet, be it hosted with DreamHost or elsewhere!
Here's how to set up an existing domain for parking:
- Log in to the Account Control Panel. Select the Domains tab, and click on the Manage Domains link.
- This link takes you to the domain services management page.
- Click on the Edit link for the domain you wish to park.
- Select this button: <img src = "./images/illustrations/parkingbutton.gif">
- Press the Save Web Service button, and you're done!
How do I set up an existing domain for mirroring?
First of course, make sure your domain is registered and is transferred to us!
Then, if your domain is already in our system, just go to the "Domain > Web" area of our web panel, click "edit" for the domain, and choose the "mirror domain" option!
If your domain isn't in our system, add it through the "Domain > Add Domain" area (read the instructions there for setting the domain to mirror another).
Note, you can only mirror "fully-hosted" domains that are on the same account.
By the way, mirrored domains mirror the ENTIRE domain: For example, if mysite.com mirrors mycoolsite.com then mysite.com/path will also mirror mycoolsite.com/path!
All plans come with unlimited mirror domains for FREE!
