Troubleshooting

Ok so you have an account with us and for some reason you need to give FTP access to someone else but you either have multiple domains and don't want to give them access to all of them or you just don't want them to use your FTP account... Well here's the solution, if you want someone else to have access to an entire domain.

Most accounts are set up like this,

Ftpusers 1.jpg

You will notice that all of domains (websites) are all under FTP user 1 so only the FTP user 1 has access to these domains (websites) so if you wanted to give someone else access to one of these sites you would have to give them your FTP user 1 login information but that would also give them access to all of the domains... and you don't want to do that so create a 'New User' under the "Manage Users" in the WebPanel, here's a link. https://panel.dreamhost.com/index.cgi?tree=users.users& go ahead and create it... I'll wait......

So now you should have a new FTP user which we will call  "FTP user 2" that user will have its own account

Ftpusers 2.jpg

As the picture above shows the "FTP user 2" has no domains (websites) in their account so they cannot access anything yet through their own account. Well the next step is to give "FTP user 2" control of the "Website4" domain under FTP user 1's account.

Go to your Manage Domains section in your WebPanel and edit the Domain that you want to move over to the new user's account

On the next page you will see a section that lets you choose which FTP user you want to have control of this domain (website), choose the user you would like to have it moved to. All domain files and services (svn, htaccess/webdav) will also be copied from FTP user 1 to FTP user 2

So Now the domain (website) has been moved over and FTP user 2 has access to it and not your other domains. Now remember only FTP user 2 can access Website 4 so if you need access to it you will need to use FTP user 2's login information to access it.

What if I want my main FTP user to keep ownership of my domains? Can I give another FTP user access to only part of a domain directory?

If you want one main user to retain ownership of your domains, but you would like to allow FTP user 2 to upload and "play" in a particular folder inside a domain or subdomain, this is possible with Remap Sub-Dir.

Example situation: FTP user 1 manages several blogs and needs to be able to edit and upload blog files. FTP user 2 only needs access to a folder under one blog domain in order to upload photos. Remap Sub-Dir allows you to assign ownership of a folder inside a domain directory to FTP user 2 while the rest of the contents of that domain directory still belong to FTP user 1.
