FTP with Windows XP

Users of Windows XP already have access to a basic FTP client that they can use to transfer files to and from their server space.

Creating an FTP location

1. Go to My Network Places.
2. Click on Add a Network Place.
3. Click Next.
4. Make sure "Choose another network location" is selected, and click Next again.
5. Type ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com (replace yourdomain.com with the domain name you are attempting to access) into the space provided, and click Next.
6. Uncheck the "Log on anonymously" checkbox, type in the username from the email and click Next.
7. Give the connection a name (My Webspace, for example) and click Next.
8. Click Finish to save that location (it will appear in My Network Places) and then it will make a connection for you.
9. You will be prompted for your password, which you can ask your computer to remember if you wish.

Transferring Files

Once your FTP location has been created, you can find it in My Network Places. Double-clicking it may open your remote location in the same way as Windows opens folders, and you can drag files from local folders to the remote folder and back again in the familiar manner. If you do not have the same behaviour, check Internet Explorer settings. The IE settings are tools, internet options, advanced, browsing, put a check besite "Enable folder view for FTP sites".

Moving Files Around on the Server

You cannot move files or folders from one place to another within your remote folders directly; however, you can copy a file to a local folder and then copy it back to the remote folder. Deleting the original remote file and the local copy will then complete the moving process. This is a limitation of the FTP protocol itself.
