Proposed list of policies

Like it's sister page, this is an example of a page that really needs careful thought and consensus input. The big difference with this list, however, is that we should get input and confirmation from the DreamHost powers-that-be, possibly with penalties for non-compliance. I'd like to propose a few items for the list, but I'd welcome input from all contributors. Here are a couple of obvious policies to get us started:

  • No harrassment
  • No personal attacks - comment on the content, not the contributor
  • Do nothing illegal, including copyright theft or libel
  • No spamming
  • No vandalism
  • No reversion wars - do not revert a page in whole or in part more than 3 times in a 24-hour period
  • No DreamHost referral links
  • No self-promotion outside of personal user pages

Anonymity

The "policy" on anonymity should be a DreamHost Wiki policy, rather than a DreamHost policy -- Scjessey 06:19, 17 Feb 2006 (PST)

My revisions

I've made some changes to the proposed policies, any or all of which can, of course, be reverted. Ideally, I would like to see us having separate pages for each policy, with links and synopses on a page similar to the proposed one. If that seems unnecessary, then we should at least link to the equivalent Wikipedia policy so users know what the policy is really about. (Not for all the policies, of course, since some of them are different from Wikipedia's, but for those that are essentially the same, it'd make sense to have some sort of more detailed version for people who want more than just the bare bones.)

In general, I would tend to suggest that a "guidelines" page in addition to a "policies" page is redundant. What we should have is a style guide (DreamHost:Style guide or DreamHost:Manual of style). It needn't be nearly as detailed as Wikipedia's, of course; it should probably focus specifically on conventions for things on this wiki, specifically. The more general information could then be moved to Help:Contents and the various help pages. --Emufarmers 01:02, 27 Dec 2006 (PST)

I think all the changes you have made are excellent. I agree that each policy should have its own page. Even policies that are currently identical to their Wikipedia equivalents may eventually differ the wikis diverge from one another. I still think we need "guidelines". Not all guidelines are going to be related to style; however, I like the idea of having a "style guide" as a subset of "guidelines". This is also consistent with the Wikipedia approach. -- Scjessey 07:16, 27 Dec 2006 (PST)
