Configure hosting on a non-DreamHost domain

From DreamHost
Jump to: navigation, search

DreamHost only registers domains under the following top-level domains (TLDs):

  • .com
  • .net
  • .org
  • .info

If you want to register a different "type" of domain (for example, a foreign domain), you will need to find a different registrar that can register the domain you want. You can, however, configure the domain to use DreamHost for DNS hosting and web hosting.

Setting up the hosting

If you do not already have a DreamHost account, sign up for one using the option that says that you already own the domain, and you want to transfer it. Transferring the registration at the time of signup is optional, but highly recommended. If you already have a DreamHost account, set up the domain from the panel. Configuring your domain

After preparing the hosting, you will need to set/change the nameservers that your domain is configured to use. This simple task usually involves logging in to your account at the registrar, and looking for the nameserver configuration. If you do not know how to find these settings, contact your registrar.

DreamHost's nameservers are:

ns1.dreamhost.com

ns2.dreamhost.com

ns3.dreamhost.com

Please note: Modifying your domain's nameservers takes about 1-3 days to propagate across the entire Internet

Domain registration vs hosting

It is important to note that although you may be using a foreign domain, your sites will still be hosted in the US. This will cause higher latency depending on your visitor's location, making your site seem "slow".
