Registering your domain is very important. It's basically renting the name that you want. For example www.mycookies.com or www.yourname.com, you can register your site through dreamhost when you sign up for service, or you can use a seperate company to register with. I reccomend registering with a seperate company because if you ever want to change hosting providers it makes things easier, however if this sounds confusing to you I would reccomend just going through your hosting service (ie dreamhost).

http://www.register.com is an excellent place to check and see if the website name you want has been taken or not, it's also a good place to register your website name.

registering a website name is like renting because you have to renew it every year or every few years depending on how far you pay in advance.

If you register a website like billybob.com, it's also a good ideal to register billbobs.com or any other variation you think is very close to the original name and something people might type differently if they are going to the site name by memory.
