This article lists the most frequently asked questions (FAQs) on a range of DreamHost topics. If you find your questions are not answered here, feel free to contact support:


Is there a way to try out DreamHost services before signing up?

At this time there is no demo account to test out. However, DreamHost offers a 97 day money back guarantee for any credit card purchase on a shared web hosting plan. If you find DreamHost does not suit your needs, cancel within 97 days and get a full refund. View the Terms of Service for further details.

Does DreamHost provide host transfers?

DreamHost does not provide a website transferring service. Contact support if you require further assistance.

Will DreamHost place ads on my site?

No. It’s your web space for you to use as you like.

Can I host adult content?

As long as it’s legal in the United States.

Does DreamHost offer any special services for non-profits?

How do I cancel my account?

Does DreamHost offer a reseller plan?

No. But you can resell services as you like. View the Reselling article for details.


Does DreamHost offer a money back guarantee period?

97 days. This applies to credit card payments on shared hosting plans.

Are there any setup or hidden fees?

No. You pay only for the services listed when making a payment. There are no additional fees added to your account.

Can I pre-pay for services?

There is not a specific pre-payment option. However, you can make any size payment to your account you like. Anything not immediately billed remains on your account as a credit. When your bill is due, it automatically withdraws from that account credit.

What currency does DreamHost use?


How do I contact someone from Billing?

Support is one unified team. Please submit as mentioned in the overview section above and a team member will respond back as soon as possible.

How do I get a breakdown of what I’m paying for?

You can visit the (Panel > ‘Billing & Account’ > ‘Manage Account’) page to get a breakdown of all of your services and usage.

Can I set up an automatic debit from my credit card?

Yes you can. Visit, (Panel > “Billing & Account” > “Manage Account”) link and click “Make Payment”. Up at the top is a section to enter in your credit card information to set up an auto-pay.

What payment options are available?

Accepted payments can be in the form of a credit card, paypal, check or money order. All payment types can be made through the web panel except for Money Order. For more information on billing, please visit Billing FAQs.


Does DreamHost offer any cloud services?

Yes. DreamObjects and DreamCompute are the two current cloud services offered.

What can I use DreamObjects for?

DreamObjects is a cloud storage service. You can use it to store any type of file you wish to keep as a secure backup in the cloud.

How much does DreamObjects cost?

Usage-Based Billing is 2.5¢/GB per month of storage and 5¢/GB per month of download bandwidth. View the DreamObjects billing article for details.

Is there root access available to DreamObjects?

No. But you can use Boto which is a Python library to work with DreamObjects.


How do I create a database?

Databases can be created in the DreamHost panel only. Databases cannot be created via Shell or phpMyAdmin. View the following article for further details:

Is there a limit to how many databases I can create?

There is no limit and you can create as many databases as you would like for any hosting service.

Do you provide long term backups for my databases?

Long term backups for databases are not available. DreamHost only provides 5 days worth of database backups and these are not guaranteed. It’s highly recommended to continually backup your databases locally.

How can I backup my databases myself?

Backing up databases can be done via Shell or phpmyadmin. Instructions can be found in the following article:

My domain is no longer pointed to your DNS or it has expired. How can I backup my database?

If you have a Shell user, you can log into your web server via SSH and perform a mysqldump. Once you’ve completed the backup, you can log into your web server via FTP to download the backup file.

How do I import my database backup?

You can do this with a Shell user via SSH or phpMyAdmin. View the following article for details:

Can I use my FTP user to access a database?

No. Domain users such as Shell, SFTP, and FTP are isolated from your database users. Additionally, database access is only available on a Dedicated server.

What available services do you have for databases?

All hosting services come with a shared MySQL server. You also have the option to upgrade to a private database server in your panel. View the following article for details:

Do I have root/sudo access to this MySQL VPS server?

No. The MySQL VPS is still a managed service so access to the server is unavailable. Only on a Dedicated server would you have access since the databases are hosted locally on that same machine.

Where can I view the MySQL logs?

Unfortunately logs are not available for shared MySQL. However, if you have upgraded to a MySQL VPS, support can retrieve the logs for you. Just submit a support ticket in your panel requesting this.

Why is my database hostname not working?

Several factors can cause this issue:

  • The domain is not pointed to DreamHost’s DNS
  • The domain is not fully hosted in the panel
  • The domain registration has expired
  • You’ve enabled passenger, or are using Nginx instead of Apache.

I have my domain pointed to another host's nameservers, but the domain is pointed to my DreamHost A record. Why am I not able to access the database via phpMyAdmin?

There is a DNS A record for the actual database hostname in addition to the site’s A records. Just like the domain, you must add that A record as well for the database hostname to work. View the DNS article for details.

Can I update the MySQL version?


Do database users have all privileges on the database?

Not all privileges are available. View the following article for a current list:

Can I provide limited access to other users to my database?

Yes. You can create multiple users to access the database and set their privileges. View the following article for details:

Can I access my database via IP?

No. You cannot use the IP as an alternative to the hostname.

Is MongoDB available?

Yes. However, MongoDB is only available for VPS and Dedicated servers. More info at MongoDB.

Domain registration

How do I transfer my registration to DreamHost?

Can DreamHost transfer a registration for me?

No. All transfers must be done by the customer.

What Top Level Domain (TLDs) can I register at DreamHost?

You can view the TLD names and prices in your DreamHost panel on the (Panel > “Domains” > “Registrations”) page.

Can I make the WHOIS information private?

Yes. It’s also free and most domains registered with DreamHost can take advantage of this privacy feature. More information can be found on the WHOIS article.

Can domain registrations be refunded?

Registrations are generally non-refundable. However, some TLDs can possibly be refunded within 5 days of the registration date. Please submit a support ticket to inquire if the domain registration is available for a refund.

WIll I be alerted when a domain registration is due for a payment?

Yes. DreamHost sends notifications to the email address you registered when creating your account. Only the primary account email address will receive the notices so if you have created privileged users on your DreamHost account, they will not receive any notices even if they have access to billing.

How many domains can I host?

Shared, VPS and Dedicated hosting plans have no limit on the number of domains you can host. The only service that’s limited to a single domain is DreamPress hosting. That is because DreamPress is a dedicated service catered to a single WordPress site.

How do I view and access my domain if the DNS is not yet pointed to DreamHost?

You have a few options. Please visit the guide on viewing your site before the DNS change.

Can I access the domain using an IP address?

The only way this is possible is if you purchase a Unique IP. Then your site will have a specific IP assigned. Otherwise, this is not possible.

I fully-hosted my domain. Where is the public_html?

When fully hosting your domain, you are prompted to enter a web directory. This directory is where you place the content on your web server. Drop in your index file in the web directory so it displays when you visit your page. This web directory is the same as your “public_html” folder. How can I upload and access my domain files?

Using a client, you can access the server via FTP or SFTP. You can also use a terminal to access it via SSH. More information can be found in the Users article.

Can I host a subdomain only?

Yes. Simply add the primary domain in the panel, then the subdomain. You’ll then be able to view the IP address for the subdomain. View the Adding a domain article for details.

I added a domain to the panel as Fully Hosted and the nameservers are already pointed to DreamHost. How long until I can access my site?

If you recently added hosting to the domain, it can take anywhere from 4-8 hrs to resolve online. Tools like whatsmydns.net can be used to check on the DNS propagation status.


Does DreamHost offer an upgraded/optimized version of WordPress?

Yes. DreamHost offers a service called DreamPress. This is a managed WordPress service (using private servers) which is a step up from the standard WordPress installation.

What can I host on DreamPress?

The DreamPress service is only available and optimized for a single WordPress site. You can customize this single WordPress site however you like.

What other applications can I host on DreamPress?

Only a single installation of WordPress is supported with DreamPress. No other applications are allowed. If you require other applications to be ran under the same URL, a standard VPS plan is a better fit.

Will I have root/sudo access on a DreamPress plan?

No. Only on a Dedicated plan is root/sudo access available.


How many email addresses can I create?

You can create as many email addresses as you would like. There is no set number on how many email addresses you can create.

Is there a limit on how much disk space an email address can use?

No. However you should keep it under 1GB to avoid issues with your folders loading. When you first create an email address, by default the disk limit is set to 200M for the mailbox. You can increase the disk size or remove the disk limit. More information on disk usage can be found in the following article:

Are there limits on how large an attachment can be sent?

Yes. The limits depend on if you’re sending via webmail, mail client or from your domain’s web server. More information on sending limits can be found in the following article:

How do I access webmail?

By default the URL for webmail is http://webmail.example.com where example.com is your domain name. Visit the following article for further details:

Can I use my email address to send mass messages?

No. View the SMTP quota article for limitations. If you’re looking to send a mass message such as a newsletter, you can utilize the Announcement Mailing List service.

What is an announcement list?

This is an opt-in list you can create that allows you to send a single mass email to your customers. View more information at Annoucement Lists.

What is a discussion list?

This is similar to something like a group text message. It is a way to have a group conversation via email where everyone in the list receives responses from anyone who replies within the group. Visit the following article for further details:

What’s the difference between an announcement list and discussion list?

An announcement list is a service used when you wish to send a single email to all of your customers. Customers do not communicate with each other with an announcement list. A discussion list is when a single user can send email to a single address which delivers to all users. This way, users of the list can communicate with each other.

Will email still work if my domain registration is expired?

Unfortunately, emails will not work. If an email message was sent to you and your domain expired, the sender will receive a bounce notification that the message was undelivered. The domain registration must be active and have updated DNS records to use email.

I’m getting too much spam. Can I control this in the panel?

DreamHost offers Anti-spam services you can use to filter spam. You can also create custom message filters to block specific messages.

How can I change my mx records?

You can change these records in your panel. Visit the following article for further details:

Can I access mail via an IP address?

No. You must always use a URL address. PTR records are not supported.

Do I need an active hosting plan to host email?

Yes. The option to host email only is not available at this time. You must have an active hosting plan on your account for email service to be enabled.

What type of hosting plans do you offer?

DreamHost offers shared, VPS and Dedicated servers to host your sites. There is also a dedicated WordPress service called DreamPress available. Visit the following article for more information:

What operating system is used on the web servers?

Currently the web servers are all running Apache on Ubuntu with VPS and Dedicated servers capable of running Nginx.

Can I import my account backup from cPanel to the DreamHost panel?

Unfortunately, no. You must first backup your domains, databases, and email at your current host. Then manually migrate them over to DreamHost. Visit the following articles for further assistance:

Do I get root access to my web server?

Root access is not available on a shared, VPS or DreamPress hosting plan. However, you can create an admin user on a Dedicated server which has sudo/root access.

How do I backup my domain?

Does DreamHost provide long term backups?

DreamHost keeps on average 2 weeks of website backups and 5 days of databases backups. Long term backups are not included in any hosting plan. However, DreamHost offers a cloud storage service named DreamObjects. This service allows you backup any data you like at an affordable rate.

Is there a list of One-Click Installs available?

How many times can I use the One-Click Install applications?

You can use them as many times as you want. You can install it on the parent domain, subdomain, or subdirectory and uninstall whenever you like. Always be sure when you’re about to run a One-Click installer that the directory you’re installing into is empty or the install will fail.

Does DreamHost support Windows ASP, .NET, or FrontPage extensions?

No. DreamHost is completely a Linux environment.


What versions of PHP do you support?

As of June 2015, DreamHost support PHP 5.3 - 5.6.

Do you offer PHP error logging?

Yes. However, by default, PHP errors are not logged. You can enable and set the path to PHP logging with the phprc file. Visit the following article for further details:


Does DreamHost offer SSL certificates?

Yes. When setting up a Secure Hosting, you can use a free (unsigned) certificate, or purchase a $15 professionally-signed certificate. In the near future, DreamHost will also offer Let's Encrypt certificates. Visit the following article for further details:

Can DreamHost install a third-party SSL certificate for me?

I’m hosting multiple domains and some are for my client's. Can I have my clients manage their domain without providing them my web panel information?

Yes. What you’re looking for is a feature called, Account Privileges. What this allows you to do is set up a secondary web panel login and grant permissions on specific domains, databases, users, etc. The secondary login only has access to what you grant them. Keep in mind, just because they can manage a domain or if you grant them access to billing, only the primary account user receives notifications on expiring domain registrations or hosting renewals.

I would like to attach a screenshot to my support ticket. How can I do that?

Attachments can only be added when submitting a ticket through the DreamHost panel. When creating a ticket, you have the ability to add the attachment. Regular email submissions with attachments to support are stripped of the attachment. Visit the following article for further details:
